Were you stationed at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina between 1953 and 1987? Were you a civilian worker on the base or otherwise exposed to tap water on the base during that time period. Federal investigations have determined that the drinking and bathing water at Camp Lejeune during those 32 years contained volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other toxic substances at levels of 240 to 3,400 times those allowed by legal safety regulations. The contamination included dry cleaning solvents, leaking underground fuel tanks and chemicals used to clean military equipment. During that time, military members, their families, and other civil workers at Camp Lejeune were exposed to trichlorethylene, perchloroethylene, benzene, and vinyl chloride in the base’s drinking water. These toxins led to high risks of certain types of cancer and birth defects, among other serious health conditions. A federal investigation indicates that military officials knew of the contamination more than 40 years ago.

As the full extent of the contamination has come to light, nearly a thousand former residents have filed personal injury claims, seeking approximately $4 billion in damages. Furthermore, Congress enacted the Janey Ensminger Act in 2012, providing funding for medical care for military personnel and their families who developed health conditions linked to the water contamination.

A recent act of Congress, signed by President Biden in August, 2022, allows Veterans, their families, and other civil workers to sue for illnesses caused from exposure to toxic water contamination at Camp Lejeune between 1953 and 1987. The statute allows persons who were “living” or “working” or “otherwise exposed” to Camp Lejeune tap water for at least 30 days during that time period to file a lawsuit for damages. Furthermore, victims do not need to show that the military acted unreasonably—they only have to show that they met the 30 day test and that they suffered physical injury.
